“From the moment you picked up that grounder and threw it to third, I knew it was love.” Baseball and romance make a nifty double play in Take Me Out to the Ball Game, a bright bauble from the golden age of MGM musicals. The premise is a stretch: two members of a turn-of-the-century baseball team (Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra) are vaudeville performers in the off-season. Their ballclub is inherited by Esther Williams, causing much consternation among the boys and anticipating the plot line of Major Leagu by 40 years.
Since swimming star Williams was always seen to best advantage dripping wet, the movie finds a way to get her into a hotel pool. Kelly, mugging mercilessly, executes an extended Irish solo dance (take that, Riverdance), and Sinatra, whose skinny frame is the source of many jokes in the script, is pursud by the irrepressible Betty Garrett and croons the ballad “The Right Girl for Me.”
None of this is remotely plausible, and the Comden-Green songs don’t stand the test of time, but the film is buoyant–and the period costumes and dazzling Technicolor are eye-popping. This was a reunion for Sinatra and Kelly after Anchors Aweigh (1945), and they would quickly team up again in the superior On the Town (1949), alongside Take Me Out costars Garrett and looming Jules Munshin. As in those films, Sinatra and Kelly dancing side-by- side are a delightful spectacle: Kelly effortlessly hitting his marks while Sinatra gamely tries to keep up. Take Me Out to the Ball Game was the last film directed by the legendary director-choreographer Busby Berkeley, who gets just one shot at a huge production number, a pseudo-Rodgers and Hammerstein tune, “Strictly U.S.A.” Peanuts and Cracker Jack not included. –Robert Horton

For music fans who found American Idol heavy on the syrupy ballads, Rock Star: INXS added volume to a similar premise–even if the goal was to become the new lead singer of INXS. (At the very least, there are more tattoos.) That said, this DVD doesn’t include episodes from the program, but rather performances, each preceded by an explanation from the performer as to the reason they chose that particular song. Although the show featured 15 contestants, this disc concentrates on the six finalists: Jordis, Suzie, Marty, Ty, Mig, and J.D. The other nine can be glimpsed in “Behind the Scenes,” in which they get made up, warm-up backstage, etc. The music section begin with J.D.’s quasi-metallic “California Dreamin’” (the Mamas and the Papas) and ends with Suzie’s ambitious “Bohemian Rhapsody” (for the most part, she pulls off the operatic QUn opus). Ironically, the strongest performances are two of the least bombastic: Marty’s solo acoustic “Mr. Brightside” (the Killers) and Jordis’s “The Man Who Sold the World” (David Bowie by way of Nirvana; she also covered “Heart Shaped Box”). The DVD includes Rock Star winner J.D. Fortune’s first live set with INXS–five songs in which he sounds a lot like the late Michael Hutchence. (Sensitive viewers should be advised that “Casting Interviews” and “Too Hot for TV” contain profanity and nudity.) –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Playing murder as farce is nothing new for French filmmakers, but Bertrand Blier brings the concept to a new level in Buffet Froid, a bleak, ironic black comedy. An unemployed man is enmeshed in a nightmarish situation that plays itself out with unapologetic illogic: he falls in with shady characters like his wife’s killer, a corrupt police chief, and a young beauty who is definitely not what she seems. Like all Blier romps (most notably the scatological Going Places and Menage), Buffet Froid is definitely not for everyone, and Gerard Depardieu fans might feel especially cheated by his passive performance. But if your own taste runs to the surrealistic dreamscapes of Luis Bunul’s final films, then Blier’s cheerfully amoral tale is worth seeing. –Kevin Filipski

Jean Renoir’s 1939 classic is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, and Criterion is very proud to present the film in a special two-disc edition. Cloaked in a comedy of manners, this scathing critiqu of corrupt French society is about a weekend hunting party at which amorous escapades abound among the aristocratic gusts-which are also mirrored by the activities of the servants downstairs. The refusal of one of the gusts to play by society’s rules sets off a chain of events that ends in tragedy.

Kill the Umpire and Safe at Home reside cozily on this family-friendly disc, a pair of entertaining movies about baseball-crazy characters with very different reasons for getting close to the game. The 1950 Kill the Umpire stars William Bendix as Bill Johnson, a working man so enamored of America’s pastime that he regularly loses jobs because he can’t stay out of his favorite New York ballpark when he’s supposed to be at the office. Loudly disdainful of all umpires, Bill gets both a blessing and a comeuppance when his father-in-law (Ray Collins), a retired ump, sends him off to umpire school to learn the profession he deserves. After a lot of resistance, Bill understands the basic nobility of being the guy people love to hate despite also being necessary to baseball. The script is by Frank Tashlin, the animation director who would soon have better things to do in the 1950s and beyond, such as directing Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and guiding Jerry Lewis in some of his best vehicles. Indeed, Kill the Umpire, in many ways, looks like a collection of old cartoon gags connected by Bendix’s charming performance. But under the sure hand of seasoned director Lloyd Bacon (Knute Rockne All-American), it all comes together nicely.
The 1962 Safe at Home is built around the presence of New York Yankees stars Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, who prove stiff but game playing themselves in the story of a little boy who gets in trouble for overstating his friendship with them. Young Hutch Lawton (Bryan Russell), a motherless child trying hard to help his preoccupied dad (Don Collier) build a business, brags to his Little Leagu team that he knows Maris and Mantle, then sets out on a journey to talk the legendary sluggers into going back with him to meet the team. William Frawley (who also appears in Kill the Umpire) helps keep the pace going as the Yankees’ manager, and Patricia Barry is a welcome presence as Mr. Lawton’s love interest. –Tom Keogh
